Is Your House Pet-Friendly?

Pet proofing your place is an important part of the process of bringing a new pet home. Many of the things you do to make your home pet-friendly are similar to what you do when bringing a new baby into the home. Our veterinarians at Tierrasanta Veterinary Hospital in San Diego, CA, recommend the following tips in making your home a pet-friendly place for your furry pet:

  • Placing chemicals, poisons, cleaning products, and medications on high shelves or out of the reach
  • Keep garbage cans secured and covered, or place them inside latching cabinets
  • Install baby locks on drawers and cabinets so that your pet cannot nudge them open
  • Store pet food in a sealed container
  • Keep human food and plants out of the reach of your pet
  • Keep crafting materials, particularly thread and yarn, out of reach of pets when not actively using them
  • Consider investing in soft-closing drawers and dressers to avoid closing tails or paws in the drawers

Of course, making your home pet-friendly isn’t all about the things you should not do. It also involves taking care of a few things that can make your home a welcoming place for pets.

How You Can Make Your Home Welcoming for Your Pet

Creating a space within your home that is set aside for your pet is a great start. This will be your pet’s safe space. It can have your animal’s bed, a few of his or her favorite toys, and access to food and water.

Cats need scratching posts and climbing trees to keep them entertained, and many dogs will need toys, compliments, and plenty of interaction time to make them happy and feeling welcomed in the home.
